Low-fat diet may curb breast cancer recurrence

The first experiment ever to show low-fat diets could help prevent a return of breast cancer now reveals, with longer followup, that the benefit was almost exclusively to women whose tumour growth was not driven by hormones.

That could be huge — the new results suggest, but cannot prove, these women might be able to cut their risk of dying by up to 66 per cent with such diets. >>

U.S. researchers say they’ve spotted a protein called PGC-1a that switches on the brain’s natural antioxidant defense system.

This system protects brain cells from toxic free radicals, a waste product of cell metabolism linked to aging and a number of health problems, including heart attack, stroke and cancer, says a team from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. >>

Computer workers more likely to die of cancer

Workers at computer factories are at increased risk of dying of cancer. The largest study of its kind looks at over 30,000 deaths of workers who had been employed at IBM factories in the USA.

The study reveals that IBM factory workers were more likely to have died of cancer, including brain, kidney or breast cancer and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, than the rest of the population.  >>

Five drinks contain cancer-causing Benzene

FDA tested more than 100 soft drinks and other beverages and found five containing cancer-causing Benzene. The five drinks were Safeway Select Diet Orange, Crush Pineapple, AquaCal Strawberry Flavored Water Beverage, Crystal Light Sunrise Classic Orange and Giant Light Cranberry Juice Cocktail. >>
